Fragmented Mind

Fragmented mind was a project carried out in 2015. The main focus was the exploration of the mind and social image of one through elements of distortion.

MacHirst delves deep into the concept of mental health and the different ways to manipulate a viewpoint focusing on key themes:

-Visual distortion for an audience

-Distorted mind

-Distorted reality

"Things aren't always what they seem, this is clear evidence of this when suffering with mental struggles, reality becomes distorted, your view of the world becomes fragmented and you are just trying to make sense of broken shards and piece them back together. I want to portray ones struggle representing this through the idea of using a broken mirror." MacHirst.

With a broken mind, life feels like you're staring into a broken mirror. You recognise yourself and are able to identify features. However, it is clearly distorted- To other people you appear fine and your behaviour is erratic. This piece is about stepping into my mind.

The piece was created on board, using broken mirrors, primary photography with a model, face painting and a mixture of acrylic and watercolour paints. This was MacHirst's first piece shown to the public.

"I wanted to visually make this painting look like it was a realistic vision of what someone see's after punching a mirror and looking in the broken glass."
