Heads on sticks

MacHirst's self-portraits series involve dragging inner emotions to the surface in a physical form. Through the exploration of literal and non-literal form to convey conscious and subconscious feelings.

Each sculpture documents a unique internal process portraying the artist's state of mind during creation. Focusing upon issues that exist in contemporary society,

Each sculpture has their own story, their own secret which is deliberately not displayed to the audience as MacHirst wants the sculptures to perform that narrative in an ambiguous context. Her emotionally charged work unveils fears, opinions and puts emphasis on her perspective of contemporary issues; such as the damage she feels social media has impacted a captive society.

Each sculpture is tailored uniquely to represent present moment, which  cannot be re-created or felt again.

"I want to challenge the notion of beauty alongside the grotesque, they're uncomfortable to look at due to the slight portrayal of humanistic qualities, I want the audience to make an uncomfortable connection when looking at them. "
